Despite mommy and me getting sick halfway through the week, we had an absolutely fantastic vacation in the Golden State.
Simon was such a trooper throughout the whole week as we moved from place to place and house to house. He traveled very well and was always happy and ready for more.
Before we get to the pictures, we want to extend our thanks to a number of people who took such good care of us, both home and away: great aunt Liz and grandma Janet, who gave Theo all of the TLC he needed; Christian Gulbin and Dr. Carrie Bowler, who housed us in San Francisco; Amir, Ronit and Noa Frank, who let us go swimming with them at the pool in Redwood City; Karen Naungayan, who treated us to a great lunch in Sacramento; and Dr. Michelle Mertz and Julie Drogin, who housed us in Santa Rosa.
Before we left we had to test out the backpack we wanted to use for hikes. This was a gift from our friends, Drs. Daniel Lee and Ingrid Lizarraga.
I used the self-service kiosk for the first time at the car rental.
After Simon woke up Sunday morning we went on a walk in Cole Valley, the SF neighborhood where Christian and Carrie live. Walking is a great way to get an infant to nap, if you didn't know that already.
Later in the day we met Amir, Ronit, and Noa, as well as Amir's brother, Ilan, his wife Hilary, and their two kids, at the Peninsula Fountain and Grill in Palo Alto.
After lunch we headed to Redwood City to go swimming at Amir's parents' house. Here's us with Amir and his daughter, Noa.
The funniest part of the afternoon was that Simon fell asleep in the pool while Rachel was moving around.
On Monday morning we took another walk, this time in Golden Gate Park. The Japanese Gardens are free admission on Mondays!
Later in the day we drove to Mount Tam and hiked around a bit. Nice views, huh?
Look at the bed of clouds!
Finally, the aforementioned Christian and Carrie.
Another place Simon fell asleep: the backpack.
Christian works at a very cool restaurant, Waterbar, so we headed there for dinner.
These shots of the Bay Bridge were taken from the outside seating area.
This was back at Christian and Carrie's apartment right before we departed for Tahoe.
Then it was on to where we were married: Lake Tahoe. We had a nice drive and when we got to the Marriott Timber Lodge Simon was hungry. He's doing much better with each successive feeding.
(Before the picture I also want to acknowledge great aunt Karen and great uncle Mark Bernstein for hooking us up with an amazing deal at the Marriott. We got a one-bedroom suite that included laundry and kitchen for a phenomenal deal)
After the feeding we decided to walk to the Edgewood Golf Course, where we were married on June 5, 2005.
These shots are on the beach behind the clubhouse. As you can see, it was a stunningly gorgeous day.
And, another place Simon fell asleep. Notice a theme here?
And Tuesday night is when it began: the cold. I started to get sniffly so I knew it wasn't good. Then I woke up Wednesday morning and felt awful.
I stayed in bed most of the rest of our time in Tahoe, but I was able to do a few things, including posing for pictures.
The view from our hotel room balcony.
Rachel convinced me that it would be good for me to get out of the room a bit, so we took a ride on the Heavenly Gondola. It's well worth it.
Wait, he's sleeping again? Yep, this time in the Piccolo baby carrier.
Even if one's not feeling well, the kid's gotta eat.
Here's how I was trying to fight my cold.
We left Tahoe on Thursday early afternoon, but before we headed out Rachel and Simon went hiking on the Cascade Falls trail.
Our final destination was Santa Rosa, where our friend from college, Dr. Michelle Mertz, lives with her partner, Julie Drogin. We arrived Thursday evening, and Rachel and I were both very sick, so we thank Michelle and Julie for taking such good care of us.
We slept on a hide-a-bed in their living room, so we had to make sure all of the metal bars were touching the floor before getting in.
Here's Julie on the left and Michelle on the right.
On Friday they took us around the area, which included a stop for lunch at Howard Station Cafe in Occidental.
After lunch we drove to Sonoma Coast State Park. Wow.
The town of Jenner, CA.
Then we got back in the car and headed to Armstrong Redwoods State Park, which is near Guerneville, CA.
It's amazing how tall, old and wide these trees are.
Behind Michelle and Julie is an example of the root system of a Redwood.
Finally, on Saturday we made a pit stop at the Petaluma Rivertown Revival, and said our goodbyes to our last hosts.
